A simple, causal everyday look.

Perfect for the a beautiful spring day here in London. A simple shirt and jeans, is simply effortless and surprisingly never fails to impress.

I have started to make my way through the long shopping list of things I will be needing for my 3 month volunteer trip to Malawi. Top of the list is cool loose shirts and maxi skirts.....perfect for spring so you can look forward to lots more posts.

Going in Green

I seem to have a small obsession with pencil skirts, so it was no surprise that this was the first thing I reached out for when it came round to meeting the girls.

I've always been a bit hesitant about green. It is a colour that you can't afford to get wrong, because when you do you risk potentially looking like....well vomit (depending on the shade of course)!

I played it safe with forest green this time, and teamed with a basic tee and pumps. Perfect for a casual dinner and catch up over cocktails and Mexican.

Essen-Shawl Outerwear

I've been meaning to check in all week and have just found the time to squeeze in a quick post...

Autumn/Winter are for sure my favourite seasons for fashion because you can play around with it so much, and it also allows you to experiment with layering which is never a bad thing!

My new must have for winter is a shawl. Not only is it lovely and warm in the cold winter months, but it can be thrown over nearly any look for a that added sophistication. Worn two ways, across the body or open, it is quick, smart and gives always has that effortless appeal.

Homeless & Pregnant

So, it has been quite a while since my last post....bear with me, my life has temporarily been consumed by my homeless-pregnant, other-self.

As some may know I am a fashion student, and armed with my new brief, the project requires me to become my polar opposite! Dressing, eating, breathing the life of a pregnant homeless woman for the month, only stopping to document the journey along the way.
It took quite some persuading to get myself to actually leave the house like this on the first day, and after building up all my courage I soon realised this was going to be far from pleasant!!
I have had to put up with odd looks, uncomfortable stares, not so quiet whispers about my choice of clothes, and snide remarks on the underground. I couldn't believe some peoples reaction, and am yet to be offered a seat on the tube as a "heavily pregnant" woman or to be asked if I am cold or hungry!

I hate to admit it, but till now, I was one of many who would walk past the homeless without a second glance. This week all that changed. I stopped and sat with anyone homeless that I saw, offering my company and some food, giving me the chance to meet some amazing characters, leaving me touched by some wonderful and heart-breaking stories.

PS. Please do not stop and talk to the homeless alone, although most people are very friendly, some may not be welcome to company! Also please ask if they would like something to eat before offering some food....I learnt this after having a bag of crisps being thrown in my face.

Back to uni and very busy being homeless and pregnant this month (don't ask!). Who knows, homeless-pregnancy Chic could be the next big thing!

This was my outfit a few weeks back now, from London Fashion Week and I am absolutely in love with it.

The see-though element makes things a but more interesting when playing with layers and texture, and its perfect when adding a simple twist to what would otheriwse be a simple and boring outfit.

Sunday Polish - Innocent Kisses

Essie - Blanc

Pure and innocent in white this week.

It's a bold one, even more so for people with darker skin tones, and honestly...I wasn't sure about this one, but if you've got the guts to stand out in white I woud say Go for it! It takes a bit of getting used to, being so bright, but it looks georgous on everyone, no matter what your nails look like, and adds that hint of chic to any outfit.

I must also say a Thank-You to everyone following!

At the beginning of last week Street & Rail not only reached a huge milestone recieving 1000 views, but as of today it has hit the 1500 mark so thanks again and would love to hear from some of you following :)

Gifted Graduate

Sometimes, someone somewhere creates something so beautifully amazing that it not only takes your breath away, but it consumes all your thoughts with the sense of wonder and exitement....

For me this usually happens at fashion week or graduate shows when a designer pulls a out collecion that no one expected, and it happened to me when knitwear graduate, Yuki Hagino's releaved her BA Final collection back in May!

It may have been because origami always leaves me in awe, or just because I love the simplicity of minimalism, but Yuki Hagino's collection is definitely something special and has recently been named as 'one to watch', and for good reason.

Originally starting off as an architecture student in Japan, she ended her education in fashion, drawn to CSM for the degree of freedom it offered. It had much limited restrictions in comparison to architecture, allowing her to be able to find herself as both a designer and an artist.

She begun with white cotton, column dresses, sculpting them with intricately folded stiff vinyl material and embellished with knit. Through this she has achieved excitement and intrigue between the contrast of the soft innocence of cotton with the harsh rigidity of plastic. Love it! Not only has this insipired me, but it also come with the realisation that I need to buckle down and get some work done.

Sunday Polish - Colour Contrast

I'm enjoying mixing things up a bit this week with miss-match left and right.

For some reason everyone seems to think your left and right need to be matching....time to shake things up a bit, not only with bold contrasting colours but also with odd polished nails. I've gone for grey with a pop of orange, brightening up what could be a dull polish for summer ;)

This is a casual version of yesterdays interview outfit an internship position with Christopher Raeburn during London Fashion Week. Along with black boots, a blazer and some red lippy, I was dresses to impress.

I was nervously awaiting the email this morning but now very happy to say you are looking at a Christopher Raeburn intern!! I'f you're lucky I may even be able to share some snaps from backstage :D

I've recently taken a sudden liking to print so when I saw this dress it was a must have! You can also never really go wrong with monochrome or geometric print at the moment.

This is one on them simple go-to outfits that I turns to in desperate situations, for me is easy, comfortable and looks great when you just can't be bothered. Last wednesday I teamed this with wardrobe staple, converse, to get me through a very busy day running around with kids, shopping and last minute errands!

Pretty in pink this week with Essie - Flawless. Not a colour I usually go for, a lot lighter and pastal-ly (if thats a word!)!

Love this colour, bit brighter and happy, and well more fun for duller weather.

Why not try going for something you don't usually?...You never know, you might just love it!

Printastic Monochrome - Mary Katrantzou AW13

Mary Katrantzou is one of my favourite designers and she stunned everyone last season, going in a completely different direction from the bright, bold, colourful prints and flattering silhouettes that she is most known for.

She took on the challenge of shape and for with a more reserved palette, usuing darker hues of purples and blues, infused with greys and white. All of the dresses framed beautiful black and white photography brought to life (for the first time) with drapes of fabric and big overlapping folds, using a printing, bonding, embossing, laminates and more to manipulate the fabrics into that of the scenery they are trying to portray.

Mary Katrantzou managed to create beautifully though provoking pieces, showing off as the digital print master and amazing colourist that she is, in a way she hadn't yet attempted before. She pushes herself both in skill and imagination...and it worked so brilliantly!

With London Fashion Week fast approaching I'm excited to see what she comes out with next!

P.S Did I mention that I managed to secure a placement, working backstage at London Fashion Week and hopefully going to secure an intership. The interview is next week...wish me luck!

DIY Bracelet

This week has been a hectic one and I have yet another to follow, so sorry for the lack of fashion posts, but today I have a treat for you...it's a DIY Bracelet.

Who said fashion has to be expensive! Personally I prefer personalised pieces and DIY creations, not only because it's unique and you can have things exactly the way you like them, but because they allow you to incorporate a 'you' into them...a bit of personality!

Simply tie a knot about 8cm into 3 long strands of string, I used embroidery thread and these come in heaps of colours so dont be afraid to mix it up a bit.

Plait together the strands then a 1/4 of the way down start to thread the nuts onto the strands of thread before bringing them over to plait together.

Continue for 2/4 of the way down finishing the last 1/4 with a tightly plaited section to hold in place then secure with another knot.

This bracelet is quick and easy, but most of all inexpensive which I'm sure we all like to hear. Why not try something different like mixing up gold and silver, replacing nuts with washers or making it into a great statment piece using oversized rope with giant nuts or washers.
